Treat Yourself, Sis!

Updated: Feb 5, 2024

On my journey of self-care. I treated myself to a visit to a hair salon. I had done "the big chop" but had been wearing my hair short. I decided I would let my hair grow, but I needed to figure out how to style my natural hair without faux locs. I have been in and out of hair salons my entire life, but this one was different. I visited TresLife Curl Bar in Raleigh, NC. owned and operated by LaTanya Lodge. Check out the website below:

My daughter and I wear our natural hair and we needed knowledge about our hair. Yes, there is so much information about the care of natural hair, that it can be overwhelming. I did search on the Internet about natural hair care, but I wanted specifics for my hair and not generalizations. While attending the African-American festival in September, I saw a live demonstration of the owner of TresLife, demonstrating her natural and self-made products on a young girl. I took a pic of the information and walked by the salon several times before I made an appointment in December for my daughter and myself.

My daughter and I were wearing protective styles (faux locs), but I wanted to make sure we were doing right with our natural hair, so I wanted an expert. The atmosphere was chill and professional and we learned so much about our hair. Through individual consultations, we learned about the porosity of our hair and what will make our hair flourish. Our hair was shown LOVE! After the consultation, our hair was given a detox, a shampoo (with steam), a mask (yes, a hair mask), a deep conditioner used with a steam cap, (along with a scalp massage), and moisturizer. After our hair was twisted, our scalp was shown love by the application of rosemary oil.

My takeaways from this experience:

  1. Knowledge about what my hair needs to thrive.

  2. Confident that the products I purchased were going to be effective for my hair

  3. Confidence about wearing my natural hair in twists-not wearing a wig or the faux locs that I felt safe wearing.

  4. Pride knowing my money went to a black-owned local business owned and operated by a black woman.

A highly recommend a visitation to The Curl Bar TresLife if you can travel to the Raleigh/Durham area! Check out the website using the link mentioned earlier!
